Pityriasis Alba

Pityriasis Alba is a common skin condition affecting children, and occasionally young adults. It is a form of mild eczema.

1 or several round to oval slightly scaly light pink patches appear on the cheeks, leaving pale marks when the redness has faded.

It is more prominent in dark-skinned individuals or during summer, because they don’t tan as well as the surrounding skin. Rarely, similar patches may appear in the trunk as well.

The exact cause of these is not known. But they generally occur in prone individuals during extreme summers or winters, excessive washing of face with soap or in those with intestinal worm infestations. The redness and scaling fades in a few months and the color will gradually return to normal. This can be hastened by use of medicated creams.

Diseases such as Eczema, Fungal infections, Leprosy, Vitiligo and Mycosis Fungoides may need to be excluded and your dermatologist will help confirm or rule out these.
