Laser Hair Removal

Laser Hair reduction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures today and the trend is only increasing. Excessive hair growth in cosmetically undesirable locations may be due to a variety of factors varying from ethnicity, hereditary, hormonal causes and certain medications. Laser hair removal provides means to permanently reduce hair in minimal time and with minimal discomfort. The laser used in my practice for this purpose is the Alma Soprano Ice Platinum, which is imported from Israel (the World Leaders & Pioneers in Aesthetic Laser devices) and was first introduced into the Indian market in 2016. The Soprano Platinum is the latest offering from Alma Lasers, the World’s most reputed producer of dermatological and medical laser devices.

This is their greatest innovation yet in laser hair reduction. It delivers THREE different hair removal wavelengths through a single delivery system. The patented ‘Gold Tip’ delivers Nd:YAG 1064 nm, Diode 810 nm AND Alexandrite 755 nm wavelengths, all firing simultaneously from a single delivery tip. While the Nd:YAG laser is the safest laser in Indian/Asian skin type, the Alexandrite laser is the most powerful and effective among all the laser hair reduction technologies.

The 3 different wavelengths target hair of all thickness and depth in patients of all skin color. The Alma devices are the only hair removal device in the world, which comes with a tapered tip, which can treat even the smallest and oddest body parts, like the ears, mid brow and upper cheeks. It works safely and effectively in all skin tones from Caucasian to Negroid skin. It has been proven effective in the reduction all hair types – from thick coarse black hair to fine brown hair. Soprano lasers also have the reputation for being the most pain-free laser hair removal machines in the world. Laser hair removal, does not however, work well in red, blonde or gray hair.

The Platinum laser requires 6-10 sittings at 4-8 weekly intervals depending upon the area involved and the thickness of the hair (face requires 8-12 sessions and body parts like arms and legs requires 4-6 sessions, before you move to the maintenance session phase). You will be coming in every 3-4 weeks for the first 3 sessions. As your hair gets thinner, hair growth is slowed down, and after the 4th session, you may only be coming once in 2 or 3 months.

You can continue to shave in between sessions, but avoid waxing, threading or any other hair removal method which will pull the hair out from the roots, and leave the follicles bald. With each treatment, you can expect further elimination of hair and the remaining hair will grow more slowly. The interval between each sitting can then be prolonged.

The Process- The hair in the affected area is first shaved, you will wear high optical density laser glasses to protect your eyes from the radiation, and a cold, water-based, transparent, easy-wipe gel will then be applied to your skin. Finally the laser will be passed over your skin. You will not be required to shower or wash after the treatment is completed as the gel wipes away easily and does not stain or stick to your clothing.

All our laser devices come with in-built chilled tips which increases comfort during the treatment. You will feel a mild stinging in the first few sessions which is comparable to the pain felt during plucking or waxing. As the hair gets thinner, the process becomes virtually pain free. What can be reasonably expected at the end of all the sessions is 70-80 % elimination of all the hair, and conversion of the remaining hair to fine, barely visible hair. No amount of lasing will render the skin completely bald. This is true for all the laser devices available across the world. It needs to be borne in mind that all women, however apparently hairless, do have some fine hair when closely observed.

This is the physiological state to which permanent hair reduction can render a woman who is obviously hairy to begin with. In order to maintain results, you must get single maintenance sessions once or twice a year. If you have not had any maintenance laser treatments, your hair will grow back to 70% of its original thickness at the end of 3 years. We do not offer package deals, holiday discounts etc., but we do offer a generous discount for patients who require full body laser hair reduction treatments.

Hair removal lasers are safe after the age of 16. Some women who seek laser hair reduction may need a hormonal evaluation by an endocrinologist. Any abnormality if detected needs proper medication, without which lasers alone will not bring the desired results. Only trust trained dermatologists to handle hair removal lasers. A dermatologist can conduct a focused dermatological examination prior to lasing, and refer you to an endocrinologist if needed, in order to prevent complications and maximize results. For this reason, it is illegal for untrained non-medical personnel to handle lasers in most countries, although such regulations have not yet been enforced in India. Dr Sunaina Hameed, is the first Indian dermatologist to have completed the rigorous process of certification by the American Board of Laser Surgery. Although the Board was founded in 1984, there are less than 800 Diplomates across the world, as this is the highest level of certification for skill and excellence in the safe and effective use of laser devices. All laser procedures at Skin.Health, are performed personally by Dr Hameed herself.
