Testing for Fungal Infections

Fungal skin rashes can mimic other skin conditions like Eczema or Psoriasis. Patients tend to self-medicate using over-the-counter steroid creams purchased at local pharmacies. These creams can mask the textbook appearance of a fungal rash and create diagnostic confusion. Skin.Health offers fungal testing – a simple, non-invasive, ‘bedside investigation’, which is inexpensive and gives quick results (within 10 minutes). Scales from the rash are scrapped using a blunt blade, soaked in Potassium Hydroxide to melt away skin tissue, and examined under a microscope, to check for fungi.

Microscopic examination is also used to diagnose or confirm other skin conditions like Scabies, bacterial skin infections, Hansen’s disease (Leprosy), Chicken Pox and Herpes. These basic investigations are not always done or offered by Pathology Labs and Diagnostic Centres. It saves time and money by minimizing the risk of an incorrect clinical diagnosis. In certain cases, this test might eliminate the need for a skin biopsy, which is a more expensive and semi-invasive test.
